If I understand it correctly, Firefox is to switch to a new type of add-on called WebExtensions when FF 53 comes out (current version is FF 51), that they say are simpler for developers to create.
When FF 57 is released, only WebExtensions created since FF 53 will be allowed to run.
I am guessing that the makers of the more popular add-ons, such as adblock+, will release new versions of their products that are compatible with FF's new requirements.
